Austin Ice Bats News Release
The Austin Ice Bats of the Central Hockey League today announced completion of a trade with Wichita, obtaining center Aaron Davis in exchange for future considerations. The Ice Bats also announced they have re-signed defenseman Jonathan Jolette, giving the team 14 players officially signed to contract for the team's 10th-Anniversary 2005-06 season.
The 26-year-old Davis, a native of Dearborn Heights, Michigan, will enter his fourth professional season. After a four-year collegiate career at Lake Superior State University, Davis played the bulk of the 2002-03 season in the ECHL. He enjoyed his best season in 2003-04, scoring 18 goals and 22 assists in 57 games with the CHL's Fort Worth Brahmas.
Last season, Davis scored a combined 11 goals and 22 assists in 58 games, split between Fort Worth and Odessa. His rights were then obtained by Wichita in an off-season trade. Davis has signed with the Ice Bats and will join the team in time for its upcoming training camp.
Jolette, 22, from Evain, Quebec, capped a five-year junior career in the Quebec Major Junior League, scoring 14 goals and 47 assists in 2003-04 with Shawinigan. Jolette attended training camp with the NHL Montreal Canadiens and AHL Hamilton Bulldogs last season, then signed with the Ice Bats as a rookie free agent. Jolette scored 3 goals and 8 assists in 49 games with the Ice Bats last year.
"Aaron Davis will definitely help with our depth at center," said Ice Bats Coach Bill McDonald. "He's got speed to burn, and with the new rules opening up the game, can use that to great advantage. He's got good skill around the net, and if he can develop a little more grit and toughness, he'll be a great addition to our team."
"If you look at his junior numbers, Jonathan Jolette has some offensive skill," McDonald said. "I think I can help him develop his game to improve on his performance last year. I've told him that I'd like to see him play with some nastiness, so that he becomes tough to play against around the net."
The Ice Bats will open their 2005 training camp with the first on-ice practice sessions scheduled for Monday, October 10th. The Bats will play three preseason exhibition games, with two to be played at the Travis County Expo Center. The team will travel to College Station for a 7pm game on Thursday, October 13th against Southeast Division rival Laredo at Arctic Wolf Ice Center.
The Ice Bats will then return for a pair of preseason games at the Bat Cave. The Bats will face the Laredo Bucks in a rematch beginning at 7:30pm on Friday, October 14th. The game is open exclusively to Ice Bats season ticket holders, with the Ice Bats and their Booster Club hosting a "Meet the Players" Tailgate immediately following the game.
The Bats will wrap up the preseason schedule with a home contest beginning at 4pm on Sunday, October 16th against the Memphis RiverKings. That game is free and open to the public, with donations to be taken for Ice Bats Children's Charities.
The Ice Bats will then begin their 10th-Anniversary 2005-06 season hosting Corpus Christi on Friday, October 21st at the Travis County Expo Center. The 64-game CHL schedule includes 30 home dates at the "Bat Cave," as well as a pair of home games scheduled for March at the Bell County Expo Center in Belton.
Season tickets and corporate partnerships are currently available for the upcoming season, with full-season, half-season and 10-game ticket packages on sale now. Fans may call the Ice Bats ticket office at (512) 927-PUCK, or log onto the team's website at www.icebats.com for more information.
