Austin Ice Bats News Release
The Austin Ice Bats of the Central Hockey League today announced the addition of blues-rock band "Grady" to the "Bud True Music Concert Series," with the band to perform after the Ice Bats game against Oklahoma City on Saturday, January 28th.
With a style that's been called a blend of "blues thrash and Western style rock and roll," "Grady" features a triumvirate of talented musicians. Band leader Gordie "Grady" Johnson hails from Canadian multi-platinum band "Big Sugar," while bassist Big Ben Richardson comes from the Toronto-based "Phantoms." Giving the band its Texas influence is drummer Chris "Whip" Layton, who was the pulse of Stevie Ray Vaughn's band "Double Trouble," and later "Arc Angels" and "Storyville."
Promoting their new release "Y.U. So Shady," the band has had a busy 2005 tour schedule. After beginning the year opening for "Los Lonely Boys," "Grady" was named "Best New Band" at the 2005 Austin Music Awards, while placing in several other categories. After a busy summer in Texas including shows at the Austin City Limits Music Festival and "The Black Crowes" and "Arc Angels" reunion tours, the band embarked on an extensive tour of Canada. When they return to Texas in the New Year, "Grady" will bring some heat back from a special holiday performance in Hawaii.
The January 28th game against Oklahoma City is also being billed as the "Red River Face-off." The Ice Bats will wear special Texas Longhorn jerseys, while the Oklahoma City Blazers don University of Oklahoma jerseys for the contest. The Ice Bats' game-worn jerseys will then be auctioned for charity at a later date. Fans should call (512) 927-PUCK to purchase tickets or for more details on the game.
The Ice Bats play their final pre-Christmas game at Laredo on Friday. The Bats will then host Lubbock on Wednesday, December 28th at 7:30pm at the Travis County Expo Center. That game is "Lance Armstrong Foundation Night," with a portion of ticket proceeds from the game to benefit the Lance Armstrong Foundation (LAF).
The Ice Bats are inviting all fans in attendance to "yellow-out" the Bat Cave for the game and wear yellow to support the LAF, which was founded in 1997 by champion cyclist and cancer survivor Lance Armstrong. LAF representatives will be at the game to distribute information about the LAF and collect donations. In addition, fans are invited to bring a stuffed toy to toss onto the ice after the Ice Bats' first goal, with all donated toys to be distributed to children surviving cancer.
