Youngstown SteelHounds News Release

Youngstown, OH - The Youngstown SteelHounds (10-14-1) once again found it difficult to handle the Amarillo Gorillas (11-10-2) offense as the Gorillas scored four first period goals en route to a 5-2 victory. Derek Hahn took over the league lead with five points giving him 45 points on the season and Scott Wray scored two goals. The Gorillas have won a league-high seven games in a row and the loss ended a three-game home winning streak for Youngstown.

It was an offensive explosion in the first period with Youngstown falling behind 4-2. The Gorillas started the scoring just 20 seconds into the game with an early power play opportunity that led to a goal by Rich Hansen, his seventh of the season, assisted by Mark DeSantis and Derek Hahn. Amarillo added to their early lead with a Scott Wray goal scored with a 4-on-3 advantage. Hahn and DeSantis earned the assists. Wray lit the lamp once again just 18 seconds later (the fastest two goals this season scored against Youngstown) assisted once again by Hahn. For Wray, the two goals jumped him into double-digits with 10 goals.

The Hounds finally answered the bell with Chris Richards re-directing a J.R. Holmes shot by Jamie Vandespyker. For Richards it was his seventh goal of the season with Holmes and Kris Mallette drawing the assists. With the score 3-1, Amarillo jumped back up by three goals with a highlight-reel goal by Brent Hughes who took a baseball bat swing at an elevated puck and knocked it by David St. Germain for his fifth goal of the season. The SteelHounds added a late 5-on-3 goal scored by Jeff Christian, his 23rd goal of the season, assisted by Richards and Jeff Alcombrack. The Gorillas outshot the Hounds 11-9 in the period.

The second period saw no scoring but the intensity picked up for both team leading to a ruthless third period. The Gorillas outshot the Hounds 9-7 in the period but Youngstown seemed to have settled themselves down and gained some momentum after the late first period goal.

In the penalty filled third period, the Gorillas scored the only goal of the period with Hahn completing his miracle night scoring his 18th goal of the season and fifth point of the night. The center has nine points in two games versus Youngstown this season. The final shots on goal were 27-20 in favor of the Gorillas.

The two teams combined for 131 penalty minutes with Amarillo going 3 for 11 on the power play and Youngstown 1 for 9.

The rematch is set for tomorrow night at the Chevrolet Centre. Face-off is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
