Montreal Juniors News Release

Montreal, January 3rd, 2010 - The Montreal Juniors looked to extend their winning streak to three games this afternoon as they hosted the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies. In the end, forwards Sergey Ostapchuk and Pier-Luc Gigure led the way as Rouyn-Noranda defeated Montreal 5 to 3. Nicolas Chouinard (2) and Chris Thorne scored the three Junior goals. Ben Miller, Jean-Sebastien Berube, Pier-Luc Giguere, and Sergey Ostapchuk (2) tallied for the Huskies.

The Huskies got on the board first as Ben Miller scored his third of the season at 3:23 of the first. In the second, the Juniors quickly responded in an odd-man rush when Nicolas Chouinard one-timed the puck past Nicholas Champion from a saucer pass by Jeremy Gouchie at 0:23. The Juniors took the lead as Chris Thorne notched his ninth of the year when he was able to capitalize on the puck-handling mistake that Champion made in front of the net at 3:04. Midway in the second, Huskies winger Sergey Ostapchuk one-timed the puck past Jean-Francois Berube for the equalizer.

Just 20 seconds into the third, the Huskies regained the lead when Devils prospect Jean-Sebastien Bérubé tallied his eighteenth of the season. Pier-Luc Gigu=E8re added to the Huskies lead at 11:58 of the third when he sniped one top-shelf. Late in the third, Juniors captain Nicolas Chouinard scored again, but it was too late as Russian winger Sergey Ostapchuk would seal the deal for the Huskies when he scored the empty-netter for his second of the night.

Montreal netminder Jean-Francois Berube stopped 19/23 shots in the losing effort. Huskies goalie Nicholas Champion made 21/24 saves in the win. The Juniors record stands at 18-18-0-3 while the Huskies record improves to 23-17-2-1.

The Montreal Juniors will now travel to the Maritimes to start a five-game road trip. They will match up against the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles on Wednesday and the Halifax Mooseheads on Friday. The Juniors will return home on Sunday, January 17th, when they host the Victoriaville Tigers at 4:05PM.
