Huskies shut out Beetles

June 2, 2012 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Alexandria Beetles News Release

The result was hardly in doubt only minutes after the game began. Behind four runs in the first inning and nine in the first three, the Duluth Huskies (2-2) shut out the Alexandria Beetles (2-2) on a beautiful night at Knute Nelson.

Josh Mooney pitched six solid innings, scattering four hits for the win while Shawn Riesgraf took the loss after giving up six in two innings of work.

Duluth teed off on the Beetle hurlers from the opening pitch with five singles in the first inning and a pair of extra base hits - a double and a mammoth homerun by Max Duval - in the second to take command from the outset. Three more hits in the third, off reliever Mathew Dietman extended the Duluth advantage.

At the plate, Alexandria had no answer for Mooney or Jake Nystrom, who earned the save with three innings of relief work. Alexandria native Dalton Leuschke, in his first appearance for the Beetles, had the only hit before the fifth. He singled for a second time in that frame but was erased on a double play grounder, and despite two additional Beetle hits in the inning, Alexandria failed to score.

The Beetles wouldn't threaten again, as only two batters reached against Nystrom. Alexandria's 2-5 hitters combined to go 1-20.

The Huskies tacked on two additional runs in the sixth inning off of reliever Rene Martinez on a hit batter, a walk, a balk and a wild pitch, and Scott Sanderson surrendered the final Duluth run in the seventh.

The two teams will complete their three game set at 3:05 on Sunday after the annual Beetles parade down Broadway in Alexandria.
