Honkers Win Second in a Row

Rochester Honkers News Release

(Rochester, MN)-- The Rochester Honkers offense erupted tonight with a 13-6 victory over Thunder Bay in front of 806 fans at Mayo Field.

The home team belted four home runs and tallied fourteen hits in this one, giving the Rochester native and starting pitcher Brandon Zywicki (Central Arizona) plenty of support to work with.

The hometown kid was very impressive over seven innings of work, taking a one-hit shutout into the eighth inning, but gave up five earned runs without recording an out in the top half of the frame.

The damage was already done however for Thunder Bay, falling behind 11-0 in the bottom of the sixth after a two-run homer from outfielder Jared Allen (Tennessee).

Honkers outfielder Ben Lahn (Lamar CC) went 3 for 4 with a grand slam, a double, and five RBIs. Dakota Smith (Kansas) and Trevor Podratz (Hawaii) each went 2 for 4 with one home run apiece.

Last night's hero, shortstop Michael Lukkason (Dakota Wesleyan), also picked up two hits in the game.

Tim Carlson (Doane) pitched the eighth and ninth innings in relief of Zywicki giving up one run on four hits, while striking out five.

The Honkers and Border Cats are back in action tomorrow, Sunday June 3rd, for the first day game at Mayo Field in 2012. The Honkers will give the starting nod to lefty Elliot Engle (Doane College) for the series finale, and he will oppose Thunder Bay right handed starter Kurtis McCallum (Mayville State).

Engle is 0-1 with a 0.00 ERA in 2.0 innings of work and McCallum has not yet made an appearance on the mound this year. The first pitch is scheduled for 1:05 PM.
