Hurricanes' Tetachuk Named WHL Rookie of the Month
February 28, 2019 - Western Hockey League (WHL) News Release
Calgary, Alta. - The Western Hockey League announced today that goaltender Carl Tetachuk of the Lethbridge Hurricanes has been named WHL Rookie of the Month for February 2019.
Tetachuk posted a 7-3-1-1 record, 2.83 goals-against average and stopped 332 of 365 shots for a .910 save percentage and earned his first career WHL shutout in the month of February as the Hurricanes continue to hold strong in second place in the Central Division standings with 76 points.
On February 23, Tetachuk's most impressive performance for the month came in the form of his first career WHL shutout. Saving all 35 shots from their division rivals Tetachuk won back-to-back games in a home-and-home series with the Medicine Hat Tigers. He faced 15 shots in the first period, 11 in the second and nine in the third period for the victory and was rewarded with not only the first star of the game but the WHL's first star of the night.
Of his other most notable games in February, Tetachuk backstopped the Hurricanes to a 2-1 shootout victory after stopping 29 of 30 shots from the Regina Pats on February 5. For his efforts, Tetachuk was awarded the second star of the night. In Kootenay on February 18, Tetachuk was again awarded the second star of the game after stepping in for the last 37 minutes of the contest to lead the Hurricanes to a 5-2 win, stopping all 22 shots that came his way.
Making a successful start in his rookie season of the WHL, Tetachuk has posted an 18-9-1-1 record in 31 games, 3.10 GAA, .902 SV% and one shutout.
Last season, the 2001-born, 6-foot, 170-pound goaltender played for the Lethbridge Midget AAA Hurricanes in the Alberta Major Hockey League (AMHL) where he appeared in 18 games, maintaining a 1.81 GAA and .919 SV%.
During his time with the Midget AAA Hurricanes, Tetachuk was an AMHL Champion, made the AMHL First All-Star Team list and was nominated as the AMHL's Top Goaltender award with the best GAA of 1.81 in the league. After going undrafted in the 2016 WHL Bantam Draft, these stats and records put Tetachuk on Lethbridge's radar and eventually their roster as he signed to a WHL Standard Player Agreement on Friday, February 9, 2018.
Tetachuk and the Hurricanes return to action when they visit the Moose Jaw Warriors at Mosaic Place, Friday, March 1 (7:00 p.m. CT).
