Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
CLEARWATER, FL (April 28, 2006) - Luke Hughes came through with a big base hit on Thursday night that gave the Fort Myers Miracle a little breathing room. On Friday night Hughes got the hit that won the game for the Miracle as they completed a three game sweep of the Clearwater Threshers, 4-2 at Bright House Networks Field.
With the score tied at two in the ninth, Erold Andrus ripped a one out single to right. Deacon Burns replaced Andrus as a pinch runner. Brock Peterson followed with a walk and Kyle Geiger's ground out to third moved the runners to second and third with two outs. Hughes then ripped a grounder down the third base line for a two run double.
J.P. Martinez pitched a perfect ninth inning and picked up his fourth save of the season and send the Miracle to 13-8 on the season.
The game was a battle of two great pitchers, Matt Garza for the Miracle and Zach Segovia for the Threshers. The Threshers struck first on Garza with two in the third inning. JJ Johnson and Tuffy Gosewisch singled to lead off the inning. A sacrifice bunt by Matt Thayer put them at second and third. Peeter Ramos' comebacker was knocked down by Garza, but he couldn't pick it up and it allowed Johnson to score from third and Ramos to reach on the error. After a walk to Mike Costanzo, Brian Sellier hit a scoring fly ball to give the Threshers a 2-0 lead. The Florida State League leader in ERA, Garza, went 6.0 innings allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits while walking three and striking out seven.
The Miracle got to Segovia in the fourth. Trevor Plouffe singled with one out. With two outs Andrus tripled to right-center that knocked home Plouffe and make it 2-1. Andrus finished the night 3-4 with a triple, RBI and a run scored. Peterson followed with a chopper to third that Costanzo couldn't field and allowed Andrus to score on the error to tie the game at two. Segovia went 8.0 innings allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits while walking one and striking out five.
Julio DePaula pitched two shutout innings for the Miracle to earn his first victory of the season. Alexi Casilla went 0-4 and ended his 10 game hitting streak. It's only the second time in 21 games, Casilla has failed to get a hit.
The Miracle now head to Knology Park to take on the Blue Jays on Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. and conclude their nine game road trip. The Miracle send RHP Anthony Swarzak (1-2, 4.24) to the hill.
