Alexandria Beetles News Release

Thunder Bay, Ontario - Garret Hughes threw six innings of one-hit baseball and the Thunder Bay Border Cats (17-22, 1-3) scored in five of their eight trips to the plate as the Alexandria Beetles (14-25, 1-3) dropped the middle game of a three game set north of the border.

Hughes struck out five and allowed only a Tanner Vavra fourth-inning single with Vavra coming in to score on a delayed steal of home with Jimmy Pickens, who was hit by a pitch, stealing second.

Scott Sanderson took the loss for the Alexandria Beetles pitching into the seventh.

The Border Cats, held to three hits on Saturday, jumped on the board in the first on a two-out RBI double by Danny Bethea. A Phillip Lyons RBI double and Scott Donley groundout scored a pair for Thunder Bay in the third and though Vavra's run cut the deficit to just two, the Border Cats scored single runs in the fourth and fifth and a pair in the seventh to take control.

For the second straight night, the game featured several stellar defense plays by both outfields with the Border Cats robbing Alexandria of several hits and Ryan Padilla making a sensational head-first catch on the warning track in foul territory down the left field line to lead off the eighth.

Jimmy Pickens and Matt Beaty hit back-to-back doubles in the ninth for Alexandria's second run of the game.

The Beetles and Border Cats will play a rubber game Monday at 7:05 EST at Subway Field.
