Beetles to Raise Money for Duluth Flood Relief
July 8, 2012 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Alexandria Beetles News Release
Alexandria, Minn -- On June 19, torrential rains soaked a wide swath of northeast Minnesota. Not having experienced major flooding since the 1970s, residents were surprised and devastated by the heavy rain and flash flooding that washed out numerous roads and bridges and downed power lines and trees. Many counties in northeast Minnesota and northwestern Wisconsin received record breaking rainfall totals of between five and eight inches with some areas receiving as much as ten inches. This is now being described as a historic 500-year flooding event.
Duluth was turned into an island with only one passable road in or out. Duluth Mayor Ness declared a state of emergency as mudslides buried roads, giant sink holes swallowed cars, animals from local zoo drowned and so many intersections became impassable that they stopped trying to keep track of them all, and more thunderstorms were forecasted to come.
Thousands of residents in Minnesota and Wisconsin are being affected by these floods. Many families and have been forced to evacuate their homes, leaving behind all that they hold dear. Although the rain has stopped for now, residents will continue to face challenges as they return to their flooded homes and begin to clean up and, in many cases, rebuild.
The Alexandria Beetles will do all they can to help on Wednesday July 11th and Thursday July 12th as they host the Duluth Huskies in a pair of 7:05 games. The Beetles will donate some proceeds of each ticket sold both nights to the Red Cross which will go directly to funding flood relief efforts for the Duluth area.
Other ways the Beetles will attempt to raise money for Duluth flood relief is through donation boxes, silent auctions with autographed Beetles merchandise and other baseball memorabilia, proceeds from the tennis ball toss and also a raffle.
The Beetles have been involved in charitable efforts for years now and have annually donated thousands of dollars' worth of tickets to different causes and have raised money for breast cancer research during their annual "Paint the Park Pink" game at Knute Nelson ballpark. The Beetles realize the crippling effects of the flooding on June 19th and think they have a fantastic forum to raise money for a very important cause.
Duluth needs help now after the devastating flooding and every cent counts. The Beetles are hoping for big crowds to fill the seats of Knute Nelson ballpark Wednesday and Thursday and help raise money for the Duluth flood relief efforts.
