Huge Crowd for Caps in Final Home Game
September 3, 2010 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Edmonton Capitals News Release
Edmonton, AB - A large, boisterous crowd of 3,633 people came out to cheer on the Edmonton Capitals in their final home game of the 2010 Golden Baseball League season on Thursday, but the Victoria Seals stole the show with a 7-3 victory.
The combination of a fair-weather evening at TELUS Field, Oil Kings Mark Pysyk bobbleheads for the first 750 people through the gates, and the last chance to watch the team this season, brought the fans out in droves. But the Caps couldn't close out the home schedule with one last win, though they are still mathematically alive in the playoff race.
The Caps were eliminated from the race for the North Division second half title on Wednesday when they lost 4-3 to the Seals. But since the first-half champion Chico Outlaws beat the Calgary Vipers on Thursday, the Caps could still make it in with the wildcard if Calgary loses the rest of their four games and Chico wins all four of theirs. Edmonton would also have to win at least two of their remaining four games in Victoria against the Seals.
Caps left fielder Larry Bigbie drove in two of their runs in the Thursday defeat with a two-run double in the fifth that pushed centre fielder Ryan Stevenson and short stop Enrique Cruz across the plate. First baseman Cliff Brumbaugh slammed a solo home run in the eighth - his league-leading 22nd of the season - for the other run. Right fielder Colin Moro was the offensive star for the Seals on the night, going 2-for-3 with one run and three RBI.
A unique situation occurred on the pitching mound on Thursday, as brothers Daryl and Andrew Arreola were the two starters. Andrew took the upper hand in the sibling rivalry, throwing five innings and giving up just two runs on four hits with five strikeouts. He also hit a two-run triple off his brother, who surrendered seven runs in 4.1 innings.
The Caps take their slim playoff hopes to Victoria to close out the campaign with road games against the Seals Friday through Monday, with the first two games starting at 7 p.m. and the final two tilts starting at 1:30 p.m.
The Capitals are Edmonton's first choice for professional baseball and family entertainment. Season seats for 2011 are now available, and individual game tickets will be available next season for just $10 every game. Tickets are available at all Ticketmaster locations, the TELUS Field Box Office during regular business hours, by calling (780) 414-GOAL (4625) or online at capsbaseball.ca.
