Once the Trenton Steel's inaugural season in the Southern Indoor Football League gets under way March 19 at Richmond, Dan Huff, a 6-foot-1, 218-pound native of Sayreville, may be tough to find.

The former Fairleigh Dickinson College of Florham quarterback, who graduated with his Bachelor's, isn't pulling a disappearing act. He just may line up in a couple different places.

"When I saw the Steel was coming to Trenton,'' I saw a chance to play closer to home,'' said Huff. "I tried out as a wide receiver, and I guess I showed enough to get a contract.

"Now they are talking about using me as the utility player. I could be at a few spots in a given game. Whatever, I just can't wait to get started.''

The utility player, otherwise known as the "slash'' performer in the indoor game, can be effective at any time of the indoor game, in motion, misdirection or any situation that confuses the opposition. His role will be more defined during the Steel's training camp, which opens March 5.

"I also punted in college,'' Huff said. "And with the teams I played for last year, I always hung around with the kickers and joined them in practice. I'm ready to be a backup kicker as well.

Not a newcomer to the indoor game, Huff, who was the starting College of Florham quarterback for four seasons in the NCAA Division III program, split last season between two West Coast Indoor Football League teams, the Billings Outlaws and Yakima Valley Warriors.

He enjoyed that part of the county, and the games, and the atmosphere. Being that far away from home, that was another story.

"We got two tickets for every game,'' said Huff. "I always gave them away to another teammate who needed them. Now the situation is reversed. I'll need help from my teammates on that one.

"I'm just excited to be back playing in my home state. I had a few other offers to play indoor football, but this was the best spot.

"Last year I ended up in Washington and I felt a long way from home.''

Following their road opener in Richmond vs. the Raiders, the Steel host the Erie Express at 7:05 p.m. March 26 at the Sun National Bank Center in Trenton. Season tickets, starting at $60, can be ordered by calling 609-656-3300. Single-game tickets are available by phone, at the Sun National Bank Center box office and online at www.comcasttix.com.

Just thinking about the openers has Huff excited.

"When you match the indoor game with thousands of fans, the atmosphere is outstanding,'' said Huff. "I'm looking forward to the crowds here.''

Huff is like many players at this level of professional football. He is trying to prove he can play at a higher level, both indoors and outdoors.

"Personally, I just want the Steel to have a great season, and do what I can to help us win. As far as my professional football career goes, we'll see where it takes me. ''

Like most indoor players, Huff works as a bartender when he's not preparing for training camp. He has his eye on a physical therapy career as well.

Football and physical therapy might just add to Huff's versatility.
