Mignone nets game winner; A's win 4-1 over Barons

Brooklyn, NY - The New York Aviators stretched their season long win streak to 15-games with a 4-1 victory over the Cape Cod Barons Friday night in Federal Hockey League action.

Casey Mignone lead the Aviators offensively with two goals, including the game winner, while Michael Thomson and John Goffredo also found the back of the net to help earn New York its 19th win on home ice.

Both teams came out playing physical hockey in the opening period. Vincent Amigone Jr. started off the night's scoring for the Barons at the 9:43 mark by beating Kevin Druce for his 8th goal of the year. The goal forced New York to play from behind, a task not often asked of them over their 14-game win streak. The Aviators came up empty handed after a power play opportunity was shut down by the Barons goaltender Peter Skoggard, and the score remained 1-0 after the first frame.

The Aviators didn't trail long as Thomson tied the score just over two minutes into the 2nd period on a wrister that got past Skoggard for his 16th goal on the year. Druce then commanded the rest of the period in net while turning away all of the Barons shots in the period, including multiple power play opportunities that at one point gave Cape Cod a 2-man advantage for almost a full minute. New York took the lead later in the period on a power play goal off the stick of Mignone. Mignone's 15th goal of the year came with just five seconds remaining on the power play, and gave the Aviators a 2-1 lead heading to the final period.

New York put the game away with a goal each coming from Mignone and Goffredo late in the final period for their 16th and 20th, respectively.

Druce was a major story in the game, who after giving up a goal early in the 1st, buckled down to keep the Barons scoring limited to just one goal while improving his record on the year to 20-8-2. Skoggard takes the loss and remains winless on the year at 0-3-0.

New York is now 26-12-12 which gives them 54 points, and certainly puts them in the mix at the top of the FHL standings. Cape Cod falls to 10-17-4.

The A's hit the road to take on the Danbury Whalers on Saturday and Sunday night.
