Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
FISHKILL, NY --- For the second time in the last three days, the Hudson Valley Renegades got a 10th-inning walkoff victory over the Vermont Lake Monsters with a 6-5 New York-Penn League win Monday night at Dutchess Stadium.
After a walkoff wild pitch for a 3-2 win over Vermont Saturday, Hudson Valley scored the winning run Monday night on a one-out walk followed by a two-out infeld single, walk to load the bases and game-ending Carl Chester RBI infeld single to third base off Lake Monster reliever Malik Jones (0-1).
Vermont had trailed 2-0 since the first inning when they scored a run in the seventh when Will Toffey led off with a double and later scored on a Jarrett Costa RBI groundout. Then with one out in the ninth, Toffey and Payton Squier singled back-to-back before a Costa sacrifice fly tied the game 2-2.
Kevin Merrell followed with a double to left advancing Squier to third before Vermont took a 3-2 lead on a fielding error. Logan Farrar gave the Lake Monsters a three-run lead with his second double of the night, a two-run two-bagger to right field.
But after Vermont closer Wandisson Charles issued a leadoff walk and two-out walk (with two strikeouts inbetween) in the bottom of the ninth, Tampa Bay's 2017 first-round pick Brendan McKay smacked a two-out, three-run homer on a 3-2 pitch to right field to tie the game 5-5.
The Renegades had jumped out quickly with their two runs in the bottom of the first off Vermont starter Oscar Tovar on a Chester RBI single and Zacrey Law sacrifice fly. Tovar settled down to finish with two runs on four hits with three walks and six strikeouts over five innings.
Renegades starter Mickey York lowered his league-leading ERA to 0.82 while extending his consecutive scoreless streak to 30 innings. He gave up just a one-out single to Ryan Gridley in the first inning and a Hunter Hargrove leadoff single in the second before retiring 12 of the final 14 Vermont batters he faced.
Farrar went 3-for-5 with two doubles and two RBI, while Toffey 2-for-3 with one walk, two runs scored and a double for Vermont (25-22). The Lake Monsters outhit the Renegades 10-9, but five Vermont pitchers combined to issue a season-high 11 walks, including four over the last two innings, and had 13 strikeouts in the loss.
With a 1 1/2 game lead over Tri-City for first-place in the Stedler Division, Vermont returns home to historic Centennial Field on Tuesday at 7:05 pm to begin a three-game series against the Batavia Muckdogs.
