New Jersey Pride News Release
PISCATAWAY -Pride attackman Jesse Hubbard made history, but the expansion Denver Outlaws didn't care, as the New Jersey captain's 200th career tally couldn't erase an early seven goal deficit as the home squad fell 19-15. The Pride fall to 3-2 on the season and into third place in the Eastern Conference.
"It was disappointing the way we came out in the first half,'' said Pride head coach Peter Jacobs, who watched his team fall behind 7-2 after one quarter and 12-5 at halftime. "We played better in the second half, but if you expect to win games in this league you have to play four quarters of lacrosse.''
Hubbard took a pass from Kyle Harrison and sent a 2-pointer over the shoulder of his former teammate Trevor Tierney to cut the Denver lead to one goal at 16-15 with 11:17 left in the game, sending the crowd into a frenzy and making him just the second player in league history to reach that elusive milestone.
"It was great to hear the crowd really appreciate what Jesse has done for the team in his six years playing with the team,'' Jacobs said. "He is an exceptional player and I am very happy for him.''
The problems for New Jersey began at the face-off âX' where Pride midfielder Andy Corno won 14-of-29 draws, well below his season average of .576 thus far. That translated into three first-half goals from Bud Light Game MVP Matt Brown, and another two from Hunter Lochte. Brown ended the game with five goals and two assists.
"We didn't have an answer for them early on,'' Jacobs said. "We slowly got things going on that side of the ball but it wasn't in time.''
The Pride scored five of the first seven goals of the second half, including a pair of goals from Adam Doneger, including one mammoth 2-pointer. A.J. Haugen also contributed two of his three goals in that third quarter. But in the fourth after Hubbard's 200th goal cut it to one, the Outlaws' Josh Sims struck from beyond the arc himself to bring the lead back to three and the team would get no closer.
"You've got to finish games like that, but sometimes you can't if you start slow,'' Jacobs said. "There is an old adage that you can't win games in the first quarter, but you definitely can lose them, and that pretty much got us tonight.''
Liam Banks and Conor Ford both had two goals to go along with the pair from both Doneger and Hubbard, and Scott Urick and Dan Chemotti both added single tallies. Kyle Harrison had three assists, and Banks, Doneger, Hubbard and Walid Hajj also had a helper.
