San Francisco Dragons News Release
Boston, MA -In front of a crowd of 7,509 at Nickerson Field in Boston, MA, the San Francisco Dragons (2-2) lost their first meeting with an Eastern Conference team when the Boston Cannons (4-1) triumphed with a final score of 18-15.
The game got off to quick start for Boston when they jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the opening minutes. But the Dragons roared back with five unanswered goals, ending the first quarter with a 5-2 edge. The Dragons continued their dominance in the second quarter by outscoring the Cannons 4-2, and had a 9-4 lead going into halftime.
At the beginning of the third quarter, the Boston Cannons started to turn around a game that once had all the ingredients of a laugher. Outscoring the Dragons 5-3 in the quarter, Boston had narrowed San Francisco's lead to 12-9.
The fourth quarter started with three unanswered goals from the Cannons, knotting the score at 12. A-tug-of-war then ensued as the Dragons and Cannons went back and forth until Boston midfielder Chris Fiore scored one of his three goals, tilting the score 15-14 in Boston's favor. The Cannons would never trail again; as they went on to score three more unanswered goals. In the closing minutes of the game, Dragons midfielder Jarrett Park added a goal to bring the final score to 18-15, Boston.
Leading the Cannons with 4 total goals each, and 2 fourth quarter goals each, were attackers Jonathon Christmas and Conor Gill. The two attackers were also savvy when it came to creating opportunities for the Cannons, scooping up 4 and 6 ground balls, respectively. Christmas also had one assist to bring his point total to 5, and Gill chipped in with two assists of his own, bringing his total to 6.
The Dragons offense was lead by attacker Ryan Powell, MLL's Week 4 Player of the Week, with 5 goals and 3 assists. Also contributing a hat trick to the effort was attacker Matt Alrich. Alrich's 3 goals give him 9 on the season, good enough for second place amongst the Dragons. Despite only having played in 3 games, Powell is leading the team with 17 goals.
Next week, the Dragons take on division rivals the Denver Outlaws (4-1) who beat the New Jersey Pride (3-2) tonight by a score of 19-15. The season series between the Outlaws and the Dragons is tied 1-1.
