Milwaukee Wave News Release
(Milwaukee, WI) Forward Greg Howes completed a hat trick when scored on a blast just inside the penalty area at 3:22 of the second overtime to give the Milwaukee Wave a 6-5 win over the Dallas Sidekicks in a Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) contest Saturday night (2/14) at U.S. Cellular Arena. Howes, who had tied the contest with a sixth attacker goal at 14:16 of the fourth quarter, scored off a pass from Matt Stewart as the Wave improved its record to a league-best 18-6. Dallas, which was led Martin Nash's four goals, fell to 14-11. The Sidekicks are now 0-1 against Milwaukee this season and 0-7 lifetime against the Wave. Game two of the four-game series between the clubs will take place this Friday (2/20), 7:05 PM at Reunion Arena in Dallas, TX. (Radio broadcast time will be 6:45 PM on 540 AM, WRRD.)
The game did not appear to be headed for a dramatic ending when the Wave jumped out to a 3-0 first half lead capped off by Joe Reiniger's goal at 3:12 of the second quarter. Nash finally got Dallas on the board with his first goal just before halftime (14:59).
Howes scored his first goal on a penalty kick at 2:14 of the third quarter following a hand-ball penalty to Dallas' Jose Alvarado. Nash responded with three consecutive goals, the latter of which tied the score at 4-4 at 0:31 of the fourth quarter. The Sidekicks took the lead when Frank Filo tallied an unassisted goal at 11:03 of the fourth quarter.
Milwaukee inserted Troy Dusosky as an extra attacker for goalkeeper Nick Vorberg and the strategy paid off when Howes scored to even the count (5-5) with just 44 seconds remaining. Both teams had chances to win it in the first overtime, especially Dallas which saw a 30-foot shot from Nash get deflected off the crossbar by Vorberg.
Vorberg (8-3) picked up the win by stopping 17-of-22 shots faced, while DJ Horvath (5-10), who was making his debut for the Sidekicks, saved 18-of-24.
Milwaukee will play in Dallas, as well as Philadelphia (Sunday, 2/22, 12:05 PM CST) next weekend prior to the MISL All-Star Weekend Feb. 27-29 in St. Louis. The Wave returns to U.S. Cellular Arena for a pair of home games the following weekend; Saturday, March 6, 4:05 PM v. Kansas City and Sunday, March 7, 1:05 PM v. St. Louis.
