Milwaukee Wave News Release
MILWAUKEE (Jan. 4, 2008) -- Shaking off the effects of a shore hip, Greg Howes had two goals and an assist to help the Milwaukee Wave defeat the Philadelphia KiXX 12-10 on Friday night at the U.S. Cellular Arena.
Combined with losses by Detroit, Chicago and New Jersey the same night, Milwaukee climbed into a first-place tie in the Major Indoor Soccer League with those teams at 8-4, heading into a Saturday night game at the winless Orlando Sharks. California is just a half-game behind at 7-4.
Troy Dusosky added two goals, including the game-winner, and the Wave surrendered 10 or fewer points for the sixth consecutive game. Milwaukee dominated the first quarter with a 13-2 shot on goal edge, but exited with just a 2-all tie. The Wave gained control of the game in the second quarter with a pair of power play goals, one a penalty kick by Howes and the second by Anthony Maher, on a rebound of a shot by Jonathan Santos. That made the score 10-4, but the KiXX would not go away. Goals by Anthony Donatelli, Pat Morris and Ryan Heins, the last with 8:17 remaining, pulled Philadelphia within 12-10.
Then the Wave had to survive two tremendous opportunities by the KiXX. With 5:09 left, a shorthanded chance beat Nick Vorberg but deflected off the inside of the far post. And with only 10 seconds remaining, Vorberg had to go high and gather in a header that was on target in a scrum in front of his net.
Wave coach Keith Tozer gave his team credit for battling without necessarily playing their best game. The team came into the game with a long list of injuries, and Jonathan Santos exited Friday's game in the fourth quarter with an elbow injury along the boards. Milwaukee converted 3 of 4 power play opportunities and hammered 35 shots on goal. Vorberg made 13 saves.
Howes' output gives him 46 points, but he actually fell one point behind Monterrey's Dino Delevski in the MISL scoring chase. Delevski scored six points in La Raza's 16-14 win over Chicago on Friday.
Milwaukee now goes on the road for most of January, beginning tonight at Orlando. The next home game is 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 27 against the Chicago Storm. Fans can get the best available ticket at the U.S. Cellular Arena for just $12, so the earlier you call, the better your seat. It's also Retro Night with 97.3 the Brew, and the first 3,500 kids 14 and under will receive the first soccer-themed Mr. Potato Head, courtesy of Aurora Quickcare.
