January 4, 2008 - Major Indoor Soccer League 2 (MISL 2)
New Jersey Ironmen News Release
NEWARK, NJ- The New Jersey Ironmen (8-4) are pleased to announce that Survivor-Africa winner and charitable activist Ethan Zohn will be serving as the honorary captain when the club hosts the Detroit Ignition (8-4) Saturday night at Prudential Center. Kickoff for the crucial midseason match up is 7:30 p.m.
Originally from Lexington, Massachusetts, Zohn has been very altruistic in all aspects of his life since receiving the million dollar prize for winning Survivor-Africa. He has since founded Grassroots Soccer, which is a non-profit organization that trains Africa's professional soccer players to teach children about HIV/AIDS prevention. He has further served as a spokesperson for America Scores, an organization that assists urban children in educational soccer programs. His charitable work has also extended into other programs such as Kick AIDS, the Elizabeth Glazer Pediatric Aids organization, YouthAids and the Colon Cancer Alliance.
Zohn was honored as the 2004 Nkosi Johnson Community Spirit Award by the International Association of Physicians in AIDS Care, and he was awarded with the 'Heroes Among Us' award by the Boston Celtics and the Massachusetts State Department. He also received the Auxilia Chimuroso award by the U.S. State Department in Zimbabwe.
In addition to his philanthropic work, Zohn has deep soccer roots. He played goalkeeper at Vassar College in New York while acquiring his degree in Biology. He went on to play professionally for the Hawaii Tsunami and the Cape Cod Crusaders of the USL as well as in Zimbabwe for the Highlanders Football Club. He also competed with the U.S. National Maccabiah Team in Israel in both 1997 and 2001.
Zohn spent 1998-2002 as an assistant coach for the Farleigh Dickinson University men's and women's soccer teams. In 2005 he began to co-host the Metro Soccer Report (renamed MSG Soccer Report) on the MSG Network, a weekly show dedicated to the New York Red Bulls. Beginning in April 2006, he started hosting FC Fox on the Fox Soccer Channel.
Zohn joins an impressive list of honorary captains for the New Jersey Ironmen in their inaugural season. The club has already hosted soccer legend Pelé, former MLS/ U.S. national team midfielder Tab Ramos and former MLS/ Venezuela national team forward Giovanni Savarese.
New Jersey saw a three-game winning streak get snapped by the sweltering defense of the Baltimore Blast (6-5) in a road contest on Friday night. The club hopes to quickly revert back to their winning ways when they host the Ignition on Saturday. Currently, a special 2-For-1 ticket offer is in effect for all four January home games at Prudential Center. Tickets can be purchased today by calling 1-800-IRONMEN.
