Houston Takers News Release

Indianapolis, IN. The American Basketball Association (ABA) today announced that the Houston Takers will be the next team to face the powerful Beijing Aoshen Olympian in a two-game series this weekend in Singapore, China. The Takers are the fourth ABA team to make the trip to Singapore in the inaugural season as the league develops its Asian initiative. Thus far, The Beijing team has been taking the measure of the visiting US teams, "and we're going to do everything we can to reverse that," said Houston team owner, Larry Leonard III. "We have a talented team ready to compete."

"The games are growing rapidly in popularity there," said Brad Hester, ABA VP of Team Operations. "The Olympians are televising their games back to China with an NBA-like five camera production. And they are making the games available to the US, Canada, and the worldwide Asian population through CoLours TV and KyLin TV (see ABA website: www.abalive.com for details). And shortly we will be announcing the plan to broadcast these games to fifteen countries in Europe."

In addition, Tom Chichester, ABA Director of Officials, as well as other ABA referees, have been in Singapore working with local referees on ABA rules and style of play. In this weekend's games, for the first time, Singapore refs worked the games, "and they did a tremendous job," stated Chichester. "A great group of guys, very serious, very dedicated, very talented."
