Houston Dynamo FC News Release
HOUSTON - The defending Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup champion Houston Dynamo FC bowed out of the tournament tonight, falling 10-9 on penalties in the Round of 32 to Detroit City FC.
Houston and Detroit matched three goals apiece in regulation, followed by a scoreless extra time period that then saw the penalty shootout come down to the goalkeepers' attempts.
Houston opened scoring in the sixth minute after captain Héctor Herrera's corner kick delivery to the near post found the feet of a charging Griffin Dorsey, who guided the ball into the bottom corner of the net. The play marked Dorsey's second goal of the year and Herrera's first assist.
Midfielder Latif Blessing scored his first goal for Houston in the 31 st minute after an early pass from Herrera to forward Gabe Segal, who quickly funneled the ball to Blessing.
Detroit found the back of the net in the 41 st minute when Ryan Williams struck a ball from well outside of the box that gave goalkeeper Andrew Tarbell no chance at saving.
Detroit leveled the score at two goals apiece in the 75 th minute thanks to a low shot from Yazeed Matthews that found the bottom far corner.
Houston responded quickly, as midfielder Adalberto "Coco" Carrasquilla scored two minutes later, cutting to the left and sending the ball into the far bottom corner from outside the penalty box.
However, Detroit fought back again, with Devon Amoo-Mensah finding the back of the net in the 83 rd minute to bring the match level again to force extra time.
Houston wraps up the week returning to MLS play with a road trip to Sporting Kansas City on Saturday, May 12, followed by a midweek road trip to in-state rivals Austin FC on Wednesday, May 15.
