Houston Dynamo Fall to FC Dallas in eMLS Tournament

May 3, 2020 - Major League Soccer (MLS) - Houston Dynamo News Release

HOUSTON - Houston Dynamo winger Memo Rodriguez and eMLS competitor Memo 'Kid M3mito' Treviño fell to FC Dallas midfielder Fafa Picault and Ihab "i9ibbs" Abualneel on a 'golden goal' earlier this evening in Week 3 of the eMLS Tournament on FS1.

Rodriguez and Picault played to a scoreless draw to open the two-leg series, Kid M3mito and i9ibbs followed with a tight, scoreless draw of their own, forcing a decisive third match between Rodriguez and Picault.

In Game 1, Rodriguez generated the first scoring opportunity after he found his digital self inside the box with a through ball in the 27th minute, but the ensuing shot just missed wide of the far post. Houston held firm, and the only caution of the game came toward the end of the first half as defender Kiki Struna committed a foul near midfield. Houston's e-backline was tested in the 62nd minute after Picault found Michael Barrios at the top of the box to force a save from goalkeeper Marko Maric at the near post. Rodriguez won a corner kick in the final minute of regulation, but FC Dallas cleared the cross to preserve the scoreless draw.

Treviño, also known by his gaming tag as Kid M3mito, and Abualneel played to a scoreless draw in the second match of the series to force a golden goal match between the midfielders. In something of a rarity in the eMLS world, the match played out very tightly with few clean scoring opportunities for either side.

Because the first two matches were level on aggregate, the third and decisive match would be decided by the 'golden goal' rule, meaning that the first player to score would win. The two MLS pros retook the controls, and FC Dallas Forward Zdeněk Ondrášek forced a save and capitalized on the rebound in the 22nd minute to give Dallas the game-winning goal.
