Houston Dash News Release
A free-kickÃÂ stunnerÃÂ from midfielderÃÂ Gabby SeilerÃÂ lifted theÃÂ Houston DashÃÂ 2-1over the North Carolina Courage this evening at Sahlen's Stadium.
Seiler's goalÃÂ secured Houston's first ever victory in North Carolina against the Courage. The free kick was awarded to the DashÃÂ after Courage midfielder, and former Dash international,ÃÂ Denise O'SullivanÃÂ conceded a foul outside the box.ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ
Dash midfielderÃÂ SheaÃÂ GroomÃÂ scored the opening goal of the gameÃÂ in the ninth minuteÃÂ afterÃÂ forwardÃÂ Veronica LatskoÃÂ filtered a ball through two Courage defendersÃÂ intoÃÂ the box. Groom placed the ball in the left corner of the Courage goal to give Houston the lead. Tonight's game was the 100th NWSL regular-season appearance for Groom, andÃÂ 23rdÃÂ for the Dash.ÃÂ ÃÂ
North CarolinaÃÂ knocked on the door early afterÃÂ forward Jessica McDonald punched a headerÃÂ pastÃÂ Dash goalkeeperÃÂ Lindsey Harris,ÃÂ but the former Dash forward was ruledÃÂ offside.
The Courage responded with a goal seven minutesÃÂ after Houston took the leadÃÂ when forward Kristen HamiltonÃÂ capitalizedÃÂ onÃÂ a loose ball in the box that deflected off midfielderÃÂ Emily Ogle, punching it inÃÂ pastÃÂ Harris.ÃÂ
North Carolina continued to knock on the door, staying dangerous on Houston'sÃÂ half of the field. HamiltonÃÂ found the back of the netÃÂ in the 35th minute from the right side of the box,ÃÂ butÃÂ her effortÃÂ was ruled offside.
The last chance for the Dash before halftime came in the 45th minute when Latsko beat Courage defender Kaleigh Kurtz to the ball and shot a ballÃÂ fromÃÂ a tough angle, missingÃÂ just wide of the goal post.ÃÂ
The Dash started the second half with energy,ÃÂ playing in and aroundÃÂ the CourageÃÂ penalty boxÃÂ in theÃÂ openingÃÂ minutes. ForwardÃÂ Jasmyne SpencerÃÂ took a chance in the 52nd minute when she dribbled into the box and shot between two Courage defenders, forcing Courage goalkeeper Casey Murphy's second save of the game.
Houston is backÃÂ at homeÃÂ next week whenÃÂ the Portland Thorns visit BBVA Stadium for the two sides' first matchup of the regular season.ÃÂ Kickoff is set forÃÂ 7:30 p.m. CT, and fans can follow the action on Paramount+ and Twitch internationally.
