Youngstown SteelHounds News Release

Youngstown, OH. - The Youngstown SteelHounds (15-20-2) used a solid team defensive effort and 26 saves by David St. Germain to finish their home stand with a 2-1 victory over the Odessa Jackalopes (20-12-4). Sam Miller and Ben Manny scored goals for the Hounds who shutout the Jacks for 59:15 before a late goal for Adam Loncan ruined the shutout.

Neither team could find the back of the net in the opening period but the first 20 minutes certainly didn't lack in excitement as Youngstown outshot the Jackalopes 10-4 in the period but All-Star goaltender Mike Gorman looked very sharp stopping all 10 shots he faced. The Hounds had 7:27 of power play hockey, due in large part to a major penalty called against Jeff Ewasko for kneeing Shawn Mamane, but couldn't find the back of the net.

Defense continued to take center stage in the second period as Odessa took 8:35 to earn their first shot on goal. Youngstown got the game's first goal on a great rush down the ice by Jeff Christian and Sam Miller. Christian threw a pass from the right wing into the slot where Miller re-directed by Gorman for his first goal of the season and his first goal in 86 Central Hockey League games. The Jacks outshot the Hounds 10-9 in the period as David St. Gemain was perfect through two periods turning aside all 14 shots he had faced.

The SteelHounds played great defense in the third period keeping the Jackalopes form in front of St. Germain and limiting their second chances. The game stayed 1-0 until the final two minutes when Ben Manny got the rebound off his own shot and knocked it past Gorman for his second goal of the night and second in as many nights. St. Germain got the only assist on the goal scored at the 18:05 mark. The shutout appeared to be within reach but Mike Rutter made things interesting zipping a pass through the goalmouth that was redirected by Adam Loncan for his 10th goal of the season. The SteelHounds had to face all that Odessa could throw at them but St. Germain held on for the victory improving to 11-15-2 on the season making 26 saves in the game. Gorman earned a star making 26 saves but took the loss falling to 16-9-2.

Youngstown is off until next Saturday when they hit the road taking on the Tulsa Oilers at 8:30 PM (EST).
