Rio Rancho, NM - The New Mexico Thunderbirds (6-4) shot 58.0% on Wednesday night against the Reno Bighorns (7-3) to pick up their second straight win by a score of 115-107.
In the first quarter, the Thunderbirds fell behind 16-11 with 7:16 to go in the quarter. They used a 15-2 run over the next four minutes to take a 26-18 lead. Shane Edwards scored 11 points in the opening quarter and the Thunderbirds led 35-27 at the end of one.
The Thunderbirds extended their lead to as many as 10 points in the second quarter. Reno responded by hitting six straight shots as part of an 18-4 run to take a 53-47 lead. The Thunderbirds closed to within one point on a Josh Bostic three-pointer to make the score 57-56 Reno at the half.
In the third quarter, the Reno Bighorns took late five-point lead, 82-77. Dar Tucker answered by scoring six points on three dunks as part an 8-0 Thunderbirds run to take an 85-82 lead heading into the final period.
Reno went on a 7-0 run early in the fourth quarter to take a one-point lead. Tucker immediately responded by hitting a running jump shot to give the T-Birds the lead back and start 5-0 run and take the lead back for good.
Edwards led the way for the Thunderbirds with 22 points on 9-for-13 shooting. Josh Bostic added 20 points and nine assists.
The Thunderbirds and Bighorns will be back in action on Friday, Dec. 17 for Toys for Tots Night, where families donating an unwrapped toy will receive a free kid's ticket to the game. In addition, there will be a $1,000 half court shot contest during half time. The Thunderbirds will wrap up the month on Dec. 31 with "Hoopin' and Hollerin' New Years Eve", featuring a special performance by actor and comedian, Steven Michael Quezada.
