Roanoke Valley Vipers News Release

ROANOKE, VA - The Roanoke Valley Vipers, member of the United Hockey League (UHL), played hard but fell short on Saturday night as they took a 3-2 shootout loss to the Adirondack Frostbite.

Adirondack was on the board first in the match as Blue Bennefield scored just a minute and 10 seconds into play. The Vipers regrouped and tied the score less than two minutes later at the 3:05 mark with a goal from Josh Tataryn of passes from Alex Jerofejevs and L.P. Martin. Both teams remained quiet until Martin netted a shot of his own with just 3:09 remaining in the second period of play. Jerofejevs and team captain David Beauregard were credited with assists on Martin's goal. The Frostbite came out strong with the start of the third period, and blanked the scoreboard once again with a goal from newcomer Mark Hurtubise, who put the hurt on the Vipers Friday night in his first professional game.

Vipers netminder Jamie Hodson, and Derek Gustafson of the Frostbite both remained steady throughout the rest of the period, each making some big saves to keep the score tied at two apiece. The match proceeded to a shootout; in round three, referee Ken Gallagher gestured that Adirondack shooter Mike Berry had made a goal. It appeared that Hodson had gloved the puck for a save, but Gallagher's apparent ruling was that Hodson had never fully gained control of the puck, and when Berry poked the puck in the net with the end of his stick, it was therefore a goal. The Vipers had a glimmer of hope however, as their next shooter L.P. Martin netted a beauty just beyond the reach of Gustafson. A clearly disturbed Hodson allowed a shot in from Hurtubise in the next round, and the Vipers never recovered. The Vipers sent Josh Tataryn to the ice in round five. Tataryn deflected a shot off the pads of Gustafson and recovered the puck on the rebound to mockingly flip it into the net, though the deed was in vain, as the final round become complete.

The Vipers gain a point in the standings with the shootout loss, as their record goes to 4-4-1 (9 points). Roanoke will look for their second win in five days against the Elmira Jackals who will return to the Roanoke Civic Center on Sunday at 5:05p.m. Call (540) 345-PUCK to get your tickets, or visit us online at www.valleyvipershockey.com for more information!
