Host a Future Major Leaguer
March 3, 2009 - Eastern League (EL1)
Connecticut Defenders News Release
NORWICH, CT- This spring, the members of the CT Defenders will arrive in Norwich as they continue on their quest to reach the major leagues. Separated from friends and family, the Defenders players try to acclimate as quickly as possible into the area and into a routine. As a means of easing that transition, the Defenders are seeking host families for players and/or coaches for the 2009 season.
The Eastern League season will run from the first week in April through early September. This program has been a huge success in many minor league markets as local families get the opportunity to meet future major leaguers.
Host families would provide a player with a room in their house/apartment and the Defenders provide season tickets and a parking pass for all of the club's games at Dodd Stadium. The team will also hosts picnics and other events to further enhance the relationship between family and player/organization throughout the season.
"I've been working in baseball for over twenty years and the relationships that I've seen built through this program are tremendous," said Defenders General Manager Charlie Dowd. "We are excited about the opportunity to have the community welcome these young men into their homes and have a more solid connection with our organization."
For more information on becoming a host family, please contact Dale Firmin, Defenders Office Manager at 860-887-7962 or via email at dfirmin@ctdefenders.com.
The Defenders home opener is scheduled for April 16th at 6:35pm against the Trenton Thunder. The season opens on the road against the Portland Sea Dogs on April 8th. The 2009 season marks the 15th season Norwich has had a Double-A franchise and the seventh season as a Giants affiliate. Group or Individual tickets are available at ctdefenders.com or by calling the box office at (860) 887-7962.
