
Horsemen named division MVPs

Lexington, KY, August 11, 2003 â The Lexington Horsemen today announced that running back Martez Johnson and wide receiver Dougie Allen have been named 2003 Offensive and Special Teams Most Valuable Players in the Atlantic East division of the National Indoor Football League. Defensive lineman Eddie Bynes of the Ohio Valley Greyhounds was named Defensive MVP in the Atlantic East division as well.
Offensive MVP Johnson finished the season with 562 yards rushing, 71 receptions for 541 yards, and 32 total touchdowns. He ranked in the top ten in the league in several offensive categories, including scoring (196 pts, 2nd), yards rushing (562 yds, 8th), receptions (71, 6th), and all-purpose yards (1302 yds, 6th).
Special Teams MVP Allen led the league in kickoff return average, with an average of 25.4 yards per return. Allen, who played in only seven games before suffering a season-ending knee injury, had 14 kick returns for 355 yards on the season. He was also second in the league in return touchdowns, with three. Teammate Craig Yeast led the NIFL in return touchdowns with four.
The Horsemen finished their inaugural season with a 9-6 record and a trip to the playoffs, where they were defeated in the first round by eventual 2003 NIFL Champion Ohio Valley.
