Hillsboro Hops News Release

Hillsboro, OR (July 21, 2015) - In the same spirit as Major League Baseball Commissioner Manfred's recently announced "Play Ball" youth baseball initiative, the Hillsboro Hops (@HillsboroHops) are hosting a special baseball immersion clinic at Ron Tonkin Field on Saturday, July 25. Partnering with Centro Cultural de Washington County, Intel Corporation volunteers, and the Old Timers Baseball Association of Portland, the Hops staff will conduct a clinic for 70 to 80 elementary school children from the Cornelius, Oregon community from 10:00 am until noon.

With the Hops, Old Time Baseball members and Intel volunteers staffing a number of stations around the field, the kids will get to hit off batting tees, catch fly balls, take infield practice and test their throwing and base running abilities. Afterward, the kids get to talk about their newfound skills over a box lunch provided by Centro.

"The objective of the clinic," stated Hops' president Mike McMurray, "is to introduce young children to our great game in an enjoyable and non-intimidating atmosphere. After all, the objective of playing baseball is to have fun." McMurray went on to say that a secondary goal of this event for the Hops is to establish a relationship with Centro. "The two organizations share a common desire to improve the quality of life for young people in our community."

Jose Salame, an Old Time Baseball Association member and Intel volunteer, initiated the collaborative effort. "Those of us who love our national past time are concerned that kids do not get the chance to learn about baseball at a young age," said Salame, "Hopefully this is just the start of a grassroots effort to get more children involved in our game."

To get the clinic attendees excited about their day on Ron Tonkin Field, the Hops will host them at the Wednesday, July 22 day game (1:35 pm) against the Everett Aquasox.
