Hooper's Offense Not Enough as Pioneers Fall

June 16, 2011 - Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League (PGCBL) - Elmira Pioneers News Release

The Elmira Pioneers returned to action last night at Dunn Field taking on the Amsterdam Mohawks. The Pioneers would open up scoring in the bottom half of the first inning to take a 1-0 when Geoff Jimenez (Florida Atlantic) stroked a double, David Bishop (Mississippi State) singled. Justin Lacy (Longwood) then smashed a single to bring Jimenez in.

Amsterdam would answer with a run in the top of the 2nd Kody Ortman would (North West Shoals C.C) walk and later score when Matt Mack grounded out.

Mohawks Parker Morin (Southern Idaho) would give the visitors the lead when he clubbed a homerun making the score 2-1. The Mohawks would add to their lead in the top of the 6th when Shank would double and score when Josh Nethaway (Albany) singled.

The Pioneers answered back in the bottom on the 6th when Logan Uxa (Arkansas State) singled. Hopper would step to the plate to smash a homerun to tie the game at 3-3.

Joe Sinopoli (Cornell) relieved starting pitcher Mike Mahaffey (Marietta) to start the eighth. Mohawks Nethaway would double and later score on a single by Ortman.

Leading 4-3 heading into the ninth inning, Mohawks would look to cushion their lead. With one out in the inning Morin would give the Mohawks a spark sending a ball to the outfield for a double. Vidrine would give the Mohawks their second base runner of the inning after being hit by a Wes McBride pitch. Amsterdam would take the 5-3 lead when Josh Alexander(Utah) hit a hard groundball to Pioneers shortstop Ryan Normoyle (Washington College) who would throw the ball into right field on the failed double play and allow Morin to score from second. The Pioneers would escape more damage as McBride was able to get a groundball out and strikeout to give Elmira the chance to tie things up in the bottom half of the inning.

The Mohawks called on closer Abram Williams (Radford) in the ninth. The Pioneers put the trying runs on base but Justin Lamborn (West Chester) flied to left to end the game.

The Pioneers continue the action at home on Saturday June 18th with a double header aganist the Newark Pilots starting at 5:05pm.
