Albany Dutchmen News Release

The Albany Dutchmen stepped onto their home field at Bob Bellizzi Field on Thursday for a much different reason than a typical summer night. Teaming up with the Spotlight Newspapers, the Dutchmen played a charity softball game with all proceeds going to the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Joining the Dutchmen were local media members from the Spotlight, WNYT and Times Union and employees of the Muscular Dystrophy Association and National Association of Letter Carriers. They may have been split onto two different teams, but all in attendance had a common goal, beat muscular dystrophy.

The game was played in honor of 10-year-old Derek Murphy, who was diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy at age 2. A fourth-grader in North Greenbush, Derek uses leg braces and a wheelchair to assist him with daily activities. He has been an inspiration for various Duchenne research fundraising events.

The charity game raised a total of $2000 between a 50/50 raffle, prize raffle, ticket admission and generous donations from sponsors Tully Rinckey and McNamara Financial Consultants.

Murphy threw out the first pitch of the nine inning game in front of a standing ovation from the hometown Albany crowd. Local celebrity players and the Dutchmen were split onto a "grey" and "white" team. Rob Jonas of the Spotlight Newspaper managed the grey team to a 12-7 victory in the contest.

MDA is a voluntary health organization working to defeat 43 neuromuscular diseases through worldwide research, comprehensive services and professional and public health. If you'd like to be involved with the MDA please contact Peter Allport at pallport@mdausa.org

The Dutchmen will be on the road in Glens Falls Friday night at 7 p.m. For all Dutchmen information visit www.dutchmenbaseball.com or follow the team on Twitter @DutchmenPGCBL.
