CORPUS CHRISTI - Backed by 14 hits, Evan Kruczynski needed 78 pitches to navigate seven innings Friday night as the Cardinals blanked Corpus Christi, 7-0, before 5,126 fans in the series opener at Whataburger Field.

Springfield (21-27, 54-64) stopped the Hooks (28-20, 71-46) home winning streak at eight games, which matched the club record.

Kruczynski (2-1) held the Hooks to four hits while striking out five without issuing a walk. The lefty from Franklin, Wisconsin, has permitted just one run in 21.0 innings over his first three Texas League starts.

Hooks southpaw Brett Adcock (1-1) stranded four over the first three innings. Springfield broke through in the fourth on a two-run home run by Jeremy Martinez.

The Cardinals separated in the seventh when Tommy Edman hit a three-run home run down the right-field line off Ronel Blanco, making it 5-0 Springfield. Edman was a triple shy of the cycle.

In the eighth, back-to-back RBI doubles Johan Mieses and Martinez put the visitors up by seven.

Hector Mendoza and Ramon Santos teamed for two perfect innings of relief for Springfield.

Hooks right-hander Erasmo Pinales struck out two in a 1-2-3 ninth.

Corpus Christi looks to level the series Saturday night with Corbin Martin (6-2, 2.78) on the hill. Genesis Cabrera (0-0, 3.00) is slated to pitch for the Cardinals.
