Rochester Honkers News Release

(Rochester, MN) - The Rochester Honkers squandered multiple scoring opportunities in a 3-2 loss to the St. Cloud Rox on Saturday night in St. Cloud.

The Honkers felt defeat at the hands of a bases loaded walk to plate the winning run for the Rox in the last half of the ninth inning.

The Rochester offense picked up nine base hits, but could only manage to score two runs.

The Rox scored first with a run in the bottom of the first inning on three straight singles from the top three hitters in their lineup. They added another run in the fifth thanks to two hits, an error, and a wild pitch.

Starter Nick Dolsky (DMACC) worked 6.0 innings and gave up two runs (one unearned) on seven hits and a walk. Dolsky sent down four Rox batters on strikes on his way to earning the no-decision.

The Honkers tied the ballgame in the seventh inning. Michael Lukkason (Dakota Wesleyan) hit an RBI double and would later come around to score on a Justin Protacio (Kansas) infield single and a throwing error by Rox starting pitcher Billy Soule (Minnesota).

With the score tied in the top of the eighth inning, left fielder Justin Parr (Illinois) led off with a double, but was stranded as the next three Honkers would go down in order. Parr went 1 for 4.

The Honkers had another opportunity in the ninth after back to back two-out hits from Lukkason and Protacio, but center fielder Dakota Smith (Kansas) flew out to end the threat.

Reid Roper (Illinois) pitched the seventh and eighth innings with no problems but walked in the winning run in the bottom of the ninth to hand the victory to the Rox.

Honkers catcher Chad Wallach (Cal State Fullerton), Protacio, and Lukkason each went 2 for 4 on the night.

The series is now tied 1-1.

The Honkers (7-10, 22-30) and Rox (9-9, 18-34) finish the three-game set in St. Cloud tomorrow, July 22nd at 1:05 PM before three days off for the 2012 Northwoods League All Star break. Righty Kevin Johnson (Illinois) will start tomorrow for the Honkers. Johnson is 0-3 in six total games with a 7.32 ERA. Johnson has been dealt the loss in his last three outings.

On the mound for the Rox will be right-hander Keaton Siomkin (California). Siomkin is 0-2 in nine appearances with an ERA of 7.34. The University of California freshman tossed 4.0 shutout innings against the Honkers on July 13th in a 6-4 St. Cloud victory.
