Honey Badgers Add Size, Veteran Presence with Rhett Signing

The Hamilton Honey Badgers announced the signing of forward Malcolm Rhett on Thursday, adding a 6-foot-9 frontcourt veteran with six years of professional basketball experience under his belt. Rhett split his 2020-21 season between MKS DG and GTK Gliwice in the Polish Basketball League, before finishing the year with Boulazac of LNB Pro A in France, one of the top pro leagues in the world.

A native of Hopkins, South Carolina, Rhett played three years at Tennessee State where he averaged 6.5 points and 6.5 rebounds in 23.5 minutes per game for the Tigers. He finished his collegiate career at the University of Mississippi, where he played 33 games for the Rebels, averaging 7.3 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 22.2 minutes. Following graduation, Rhett played his first professional season, 2015-16, split between Latvia and the Philippines. He has played in 12 countries throughout his career, most notably in major tournaments for Sigal Prishtina in the FIBA Euro Cup during the 2016-17 season, for Pauian during the 2018 Asia Champions Cup, and for POAK of Greece in the 2019-20 Basketball Champions League.

"Malcolm Rhett is a physical presence in the paint who is dedicated to winning at all costs," said Honey Badgers General Manager Jermaine Anderson. "Malcolm has played across the globe, and he's by far our most experienced player. We believe that he can help guide our team throughout the season, and he will lead by example and assist with the development of our young players on and off the court."

The Honey Badgers open training camp June 17 at FirstOntario Centre in Hamilton. Their season tips off June 26 on the road against the Edmonton Stingers. Stops at Saskatoon on June 28 and Ottawa on Canada Day precede their home-opener versus the Guelph Nighthawks at FirstOntario Centre on July 3. The games against Edmonton and Guelph will be televised nationally on CBC.

Hamilton is coming off a 4-4 record and third place finish in the CEBL Summer Series, which marked the first professional sports in Canada to return to play after Covid-19 halted sports in March of 2020. More than 1.2 million viewers across Canada watched games live on CBC, and games were carried to more than 130 million viewers around the world.
