Gateway Grizzlies News Release
Sauget, IL - The Gateway Grizzlies' season-long struggles with the home run ball continued on Saturday night against the Schaumburg Boomers, as they surrendered four homers, accounting for all but one of their runs allowed in an 8-4 defeat at GCS Credit Union Ballpark.
The game was scoreless until the top of the third inning, when with two outs and a man on base, Brendan Feldmann (4-5) surrendered a two-run home run to Clint Hardy, making the score 2-0. Newcomer Kevin Krause then equalized the score in the exact same fashion, on a two-out, two-run homer, in the bottom of the fourth inning at 2-2.
But the long ball bit Feldmann again on the first pitch of the top of the sixth inning, as Mike Hart hit his third solo home run of the series to make it 3-2. In the seventh, after Feldmann recorded the first two outs, he walked William Salas before giving up a two-run shot to Alec Craig to make it 5-2 Boomers.
Andrew Penner's two-out RBI single would get Gateway within 5-3, but after the Grizzlies left the bases loaded in the frame, an error in the top of the eighth preceded a Braxton Davidson two-run shot over the center field wall on a 3-0 pitch, with yet another homer making the score 7-3.
Krause would continue a stellar Grizzlies debut with an RBI double to get a run back in the bottom of the eighth, but it was not enough, as the Boomers got a run thanks to a double and two wild pitches in the top of the ninth for the final margin. The veteran from Staten Island, New York was a major bright spot for Gateway, reaching base in each of his plate appearances, finishing 3-for-3 with three RBIs along with a double and home run.
Having lost the home set, Gateway will look to avoid being swept at home entering the all-star break in the series finale on Sunday, July 17, at 5:45 p.m. CT, with Lukas Veinbergs making his first pro start against Schaumburg's Aaron Glickstein.
