Lexington County Blowfish News Release
Lexington County, S.C. (July 20, 2015) -- Monday night's weather was perfect for hitting home runs. On a sizzling day in the Midlands, the Lexington County Blowfish held on to defeat the Gastonia Grizzlies 11-10 at Lexington County Baseball Stadium.
A grand slam by Gastonia's Jackson Mims in the third inning could have done the Blowfish in, but they used the power of the longball to aid their own cause.
Reed Rohlman (Clemson), J.D. Crowe (Francis Marion) and Gene Cone (University of South Carolina) all knocked solo shots in this game. Crowe's brought the 5-3 Gastonia lead to 5-4, and Cone's tied the game at 5.
Both Cone and Crowe came within one hit of the cycle.
Once the Blowfish tied it on Cone's solo home run, they would send 12 more batters to the plate, and score six more times in the fifth inning. RBI knocks by Crowe, Danny Edgeworth (Mercer University) and Trevor Bradley (USC-Aiken) propped the floodgates open in the seven-run fifth. Cone and Crowe would end up with multiple RBIs in the frame.
The offense ran dry after that point. Gastonia's, however, did not. The Grizzlies would come all the way back to within one run of the lead, with the tying run on second base, and all of the momentum on their side. Erik Davis (USC-Aiken) completed a two-inning save by striking out Alex Reynolds and Ryan Whitt to end the game, stranding the tying run.
Gastonia's Blake Drew pitched a dynamite 3.1 innings, allowing only one hit, an Edgeworth single, and nary a run. He would strike out five Blowfish batters.
Lexington County jumped out a 3-0 lead after the second inning due in part to Rohlman's solo home run, and a two-run triple by Cone. All of that before Gastonia erupted for five runs in the third inning.
Bradley earned his fourth win of the season in his first start of 2015. His 62 strikeouts tied the league lead with Edenton's David Bednar.
The Blowfish bats have been unprecedentedly red-hot. They have mashed 42 hits over the past three games at Lexington County Baseball Stadium, scoring 25 runs.
The Blowfish travel to take on the rival Florence RedWolves on Tuesday night, and will return home on Thursday to face the Asheboro Copperheads for "Thursty Thirsday."
