Home Court Advantage Works Big Against The Fresh On The Road

January 17, 2010 - American Basketball Association (ABA)
North Texas Fresh News Release

FORT WORTH - It wasn't a great road trip you dream about with the rainy weather and Houston's bad traffic. A win against the #1 ranked ABA team at Ford Arena in Beaumont could have made the difference on the trip but that wasn't the case for the Fresh.

3 Technical fouls and 2 intentional fouls against the Fresh, plus a 28 - 17 foul count favoring the Mavericks were the difference in this game. The little details turned out to be quite bothersome as the Fresh took the worse loss of the year losing 154 - 116.

With the Fresh playing without 3 of their main guys (J.R. Duffey 6'8, Robert Taylor 6'6, Lewis Lee 6'5), the Mavericks size gave the Fresh trouble. Duffey, Taylor, and Lee's absence also meant losing 49 points per game between the 3 players which could have easily made the difference in the game.

"Nothing really went our way," stated Lisa Bowdy, Coach of the Fresh. We stayed aggressive and penetrated to the basket just as they [Mavericks] did, but we didn't have the same luck.

The game stayed close through the first quarter until a late run by the Mavericks pushed their lead into double digits. From there, it was no shaving the lead as the Fresh continued to fight a battle that couldn't be won.

Frustration plagued the Fresh as the Fresh Owner, Jay Bowdy, was also issued with one of the three technical fouls with four minutes left in the game. "It was very frustrating", stated Jay Bowdy, Owner and Guard/Forward for the Fresh. "We attacked the basket just as they [Mavericks] did but didn't receive the same calls down the stretch. We still fought extremely hard and I am proud of that and can actually say if we had our other 3 guys along with us that we could have easily won this ball game. "

LaShon Sheffield, making his first return back in a Fresh uniform, was a dominant force in leading the Fresh in scoring with 21 points. Josh Washington followed with 20 points. J.R. McDougal, playing close to his hometown (Jasper, TX), had an amazing 6 blocks in front of his home crowd. Bowdy and A.D. Duncan managed to both reach Double - Doubles with 15 points, 12 rebounds, and 16 points, 10 rebounds respectively.

The Fresh will have to battle against ABA Travel Team New Mexico on Saturday in hopes of rebounding from the road loss to Southeast Texas. Fresh will host the ABA's Arlington Bulldogs Sunday at Trimble Tech at 7 p.m. as well to finish out the week.
