Detroit Panthers News Release
Detroit, MI - A local nursing home was filled with Christmas spirit. The Detroit Panthers, a professional basketball team, replaced shooting balls for spreading holiday cheer by singing Christmas carols to residents at Boulevard Temple in Detroit. With an eagerness to reach out to those in the community, who are often overlooked and forgotten, several Panthers wanted to let residents of Boulevard Temple know that someone cares.
Armed with a list of holiday favorites, Corey Gupton, Darrius Muriel, Kyle Johnson, Stane's Bufford and Arthell Woods, assistant coach, made their way through the five-story building singing and touching the hearts of not only the seniors but also staff. "The residents really enjoyed the Panthers singing," stated Ashley Stewart, Assistant Activity Director for Boulevard Temple. "It was wonderful to see them clapping and joining in on Jingle Bells, Frosty the Snowman and other songs. Our staff also enjoyed the caroling and we hope they come back next year." For one player on the team it really pulled at his heart to visit and spend time with the seniors. "My grandmother raised me and when she was placed in a nursing home, it really hurt me to see so many senior citizens there with no family ever to visit," stated Muriel. "So when I was presented with the chance to sing Christmas carols to the seniors I was overjoyed and wanted badly to participate. I have a special place in my heart for seniors citizens."
The Detroit Panthers, a team within the Premier Basketball League, is a very community and family oriented organization. With their home opening game Saturday, January 3, 2009, at Wylie E. Groves High School in Beverly Hills starting at 6:00 p.m.; the Panthers' halftime show will feature Detroit's own Spain Middle School's drumline and cheer team. Tickets are just $10 per person.
The Detroit Panthers are committed to bestow upon the community a spirit of caring while providing their fans with high quality sportsmanship and full energy basketball.
