Texas Stars News Release
Cedar Park, TX - The Texas Stars, in conjunction with the American Red Cross, announced on Wednesday that the fundraising program "Hockey For Haiti" raised $14,814.
"We have a tremendous community and fan base here in the region", said Texas Stars President Rick McLaughlin. "We thank our great fans for helping us raise money for the American Red Cross International Relief Fund. We also thank the American Red Cross and our players for stepping up to make this possible."
"Hockey For Haiti" generated a total of $14,814.00 over three home games last week at Cedar Park Center. The American Red Cross volunteers collected donations at tables on the concourse over the course of the program. Last Friday, the organization raised just over $11,000.00 in a silent auction that featured a stick signed by NHL superstar Sidney Crosby. The highest bid went for $750.00, a jersey signed by the NHL's Dallas Stars. A Texas signed Stars team helmet generated $650.00, followed by Crosby's stick at $625.00. Last Saturday, the Texas Stars wives, friends and family collected close to $3,000.00 by selling autographed pucks and photos.
Texas Stars defenseman Maxime Fortunus is one of the only professional hockey players in the country that is of Haitian decent. Both his parents were born in Haiti.
"This was huge for us to do as a team", said Fortunus. "Right now things are pretty bad in Haiti and they need money to help buy medical supplies, water and food. The fans, players and organization came together in a great way for a great cause. I am thankful for all the help."
The Stars return to Cedar Park Center for back-to-back games against the Peoria Rivermen on Friday, February 5th at 7:30 PM and on Saturday, February 6th, at 7:00 PM. On Friday, the first 3,000 fans receive a Texas Stars T-Shirt. Also for Friday's game, Cedar Park Center will sell $2.00 domestic drafts and $1.00 hot dogs. During Saturday's game, the first 3,000 fans will receive Texas Stars pennant. Fans may purchase the State Farm Family four-pack (four tickets, four sodas and four hot dogs for $44). All games can be heard on the Stars flagship station ESPNAustin 104.9 FM "The Horn" or ESPNAustin 1530-AM.
