Omaha Storm Chasers News Release
OMAHA, NE - The Omaha Royals "Hit the Books" reading program, presented by the Nebraska College Savings Program, is getting underway for its third season in 2009. Last season, over 16,000 school children in 43 elementary schools in the Omaha metro and surrounding area participated in the program, which encourages students to read books.
Schools interested in signing up for the program must do so by Friday, November 14th. After the sign-up deadline, all students in the program are eligible to participate in a bookmark design contest. In 2008, the Royals received more than 5,000 bookmark designs from elementary school kids in the program.
The deadline for the bookmark designs to be submitted is Wednesday, December 17th. The winner will be chosen in January 2009. Every student participating in the program will receive the design contest winner's bookmark. They will each be required to read four books. As they finish reading books, their teacher will mark each of four bases on their bookmark until the student reaches home plate, completing the program.
The students have until Friday, April 17th, 2009 to finish the reading program. They will then be able to bring their bookmarks to Rosenblatt Stadium and redeem them for two free General Admission tickets to a Royals game of their choice from among four home dates in April and May.
This year's program features many other incentives. Several schools that sign up the earliest for the program will win the opportunity for their students to take part in on-field contests during the game they attend. The student whose bookmark design is chosen for the program will win a prize package and will have the opportunity to throw out a ceremonial first pitch at a game. And following the final "Hit the Books" game in May 2009 a grand prize will be awarded to the school that had the highest percentage of bookmarks redeemed for tickets.
"We are excited about our new and improved "Hit the Books" program this season," said Lesley Crutcher, Royals Director of Community Relations. "We have added more dates for bookmarks redemption, as well as some great promotions the schools can be involved in at Rosenblatt when they come out on their date. We are looking to improve on the excellent numbers of schools and students from last year's program."
