Sioux Falls Storm News Release

The Sioux Falls Storm of the National Indoor Football League announces the official retirement of linebacker Donny Hilsenroth.

Donny, who has been with the Storm since their inaugural season in 2001, and also played one season for the Sioux Falls Cobras of the IFL, has been a key component to the team’s success. As a team captain, Hilsenroth continuously made his presence felt with his aggressive play and his ability to motivate teammates. Donny will leave the Storm as their all-time leader in defensive tackles with 342, he is also second in all-time quarterback sacks with 11 and is third for interceptions with 7. In Donny’s performance against the Utah Warriors on June 6th, 2003, he set the single-game record for tackles, racking up an impressive 15 solo tackles.

Hilsenroth made his decision final early this morning when he officially announced his retirement on 103.7 the KRRO morning show. “Donny has given so much to this team. The leadership abilities and tireless work ethic he brings to the table are just a few of the reasons he is a player that coaches love to coach. He is not just a great player he is a great guy. He leaves some big shoes to fill,” says head coach Kurtiss Riggs.

Hilsenroth made the decision to retire after accepting a full time position with the Sioux Falls Fire Department. Donny will continue to work with the Storm organization on public relations as well as helping the coaching staff in 2004.

“Donny has a great opportunity here in Sioux Falls and the Sioux Falls Fire Department have themselves a tremendous man! His presence on the field will be missed, but we are proud to say that Donny Hilsenroth is, and will always be, what the Sioux Falls Storm is all about,” says owner Kent Vucurevich.
