Hillsboro Hops News Release
TONIGHT: The Hops and the Mariners' affiliate, the Everett Aquasox, meet in the middle game of a five-game set at Ron Tonkin Field in Hillsboro.
YESTERDAY: In a stunning reversal, the Hops-who were seemingly cruising with a 4-2 lead entering the 9th and their tough closer, LHP Zac Curtis, entering the game-gave up three runs on one swing by Everett SS Chris Mariscal, a two-out, two-run single and a rare error by CF Taylor Ratliff. Then, in the bottom of the 9th, Hillsboro loaded the bases with nobody out against Everett's Cruz Pereira... yet, incredibly, did not score as 1B George Roberts grounded into a force-out at the plate, and LF Grant Heyman grounded into a 5-3 double play. Everett won 5-4, just their fifth win in 13 games this season.
GOODBYE JUNE: The Hops went 11-7 in June, after going 3-14 in June 2013. Hillsboro's 2.96 team ERA is second only to Vancouver's 2.82. The Hops' team batting average of .236 is 5th in the circuit, and they've hit the second- fewest home runs in the NWL (7). And even with their five-error game yesterday, the Hops' total of 19 miscues is just one more than league-leading Vancouver and Spokane.
TRENDING: C Tyler Baker's 2h Sunday (including game-winner) snapped string of 3 straight hitless games... 1B/3B Cesar Carrasco has missed the last 13g w/right shoulder inj. that affects his hitting, not throwing... OF Yorman Garcia is 6 for 20 over his last 5g, and has K'd just 16% of the time this year...
OF/1B Jordan Parr has reached base via H or BB in 11 straight starts... CF Taylor Ratliff started the year 0x22 w/5k, then went 6x13, and is since 0x23 w/10K... 1B/3B George Roberts is 6 for his last 13 including his final game with South Bend... 3B/SS Nate Robertson is 2x15 since missing 5g w/hip injury... 1B Bennie Robinson is 5x15 over last 4g, and has K'd just 14% of time this year... INF Pedro Ruiz is 2 for his last 26... C Elvin Soto is 11x19 over his last 5g.
MORE TRENDING: RHP Nick Baker has retired 43 of 52 hitters to face him as a pro, with no walks, 8 hits and one batter reaching on error... LHP Zac Curtis allowed just 4 of first 21 hitters to reach base (1bb, 3h) over his first 5+ games as a pro; over his last 1+ games, 7 of the last 11 hitters have reached base (3bb, 4h)... RHP Cody Geyer has retired 12 of the last 13 batters to face him, with 0h, 1bb and 4k... RHP Dustin Loggins allowed 3r in 1.2 ip in his first outing (on Opening Night in Everett); since then is 1-0, 0.00, 6.1ip, 7h, 0r, 3bb, 13k.
ALL-TIME VS. EVERETT: The Hops are 8-9 all-time vs. the Aquasox, 5-2 in 2014. Hillsboro took four of five in this year's season- opening series at Everett, winning the final 4 games.
Last year, the Hops went 3-7. Hillsboro lost four of five in Everett from June 21-24, 2013, despite out- scoring the Sox during the series. Everett took three of five at Ron Tonkin Field from July 26-30, 2013.
The Sox won the final three games of that series by an identical 6-0 score.
A STAR-STUDDED STAFF: See details later in these notes regarding manager J.R. House, pitching coach Doug Drabek, hitting coach Mark Grace and special consultant Ben Petrick.
