Salem, VA- The Salem Avalanche, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Houston Astros, plated a late run Saturday night but could not tie the game in the ninth as Lynchburg defeated Salem 4-3 on Lewis-Gale Medical Center Field at Salem Memorial Baseball Stadium. The Hillcats scored all of their runs in the third.

Lynchburg posted a total of six hits, all singles, in its four-run third inning against Salem starter David Qualben. Steve Lerud and Jared Keel each posted two-run hits in the frame. That gave the ‘cats a 4-1 lead as the Avs scored a run in the first.

In the sixth, Jordan Parraz opened with a double. Three batters later, Koby Clemens socked an RBI double down the left-field line to make the score 4-2. In the eighth, Parraz began with a solo home run to make the score 4-3. Then, with one on, two out and Ryan Reed at the plate, constant rainfall stopped the game. After a 26-minute delay, the game restarted but Salem could not muster a baserunner.

The Salem bullpen aided the comeback with four innings and two-thirds scoreless from Bryan Hallberg and Erick Abreu. Offensively, Parraz went 3-for-4 to move his on-base streak to 13 games.

The series finale is scheduled for 2:07 PM Sunday with lefty Polin Trinidad slotted to face Lynchburg southpaw Tony Watson.
