Lynchburg Hillcats News Release

The Lynchburg Hillcats dropped a heartbreaker to the Delmarva Shorebirds by a score of 4-3 on Saturday night.

After striking early, the Hillcats bats went cold, and the pitching depth just ran out of juice towards the later innings. Lynchburg dropped to three games back of division leading Carolina for first place in the North Division of the Carolina League.

In the top of the first inning, Delmarva struck first as Tavian Josenberger drove home a run on a fielder's choice and throwing error to give the Shorebirds the lead. Later in the inning, Stiven Acevedo drove home Josenberger on a single of his own.

Lynchburg responded quickly in the bottom of the frame as Guy Lipscomb picked up his second triple of the year. With the bases loaded, Lipscomb drove one off the right field wall that cleared the bases and put the Hillcats in front 3-2.

From there, it turned into a pitching duel as both teams settled into the ballgame. Neither team could figure out a way to sustain any sort of rally.

Then in the seventh, Jake Cunningham would tie the ball game on a fielder's choice. A few batters later, Jalen Vasquez would break the tie with a triple of his own to score Cunningham and put Delmarva in front for good.

Lynchburg would struggle to get anything pieced together in the final few innings as they would drop their second straight game to the Shorebirds. With the win, Delmarva guaranteed themselves a split in the series.

The final game of the season between these two squads will take place on Sunday afternoon at Bank of the James Stadium with first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m.
