Highmark Stadium Summer Tournament Trifecta Unveiled
April 29, 2016 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC News Release
PITTSBURGH - The Riverhounds are pleased to announce three youth events that will take place at Highmark Stadium over the course of the summer months, welcoming aspiring young players to one of the most unique soccer-specific venues in the country.
In early June, the 3rd Annual Highmark Stadium College Showcase will welcome in teams from the United States and Canada, to participate in a three-day event focused upon spotlighting top young talent to a host of NCAA Division I, II, and III coaches as well as several NAIA programs. Set for June 3-5, the youth matches wrap around a Saturday evening clash between the Pittsburgh Riverhounds and Charleston Battery. All participating players and college coaches take in the professional match, creating a memorable experience for all.
In 2015, the College Showcase participants and college coaches were treated to the inaugural Keystone Derby between the Riverhounds and in-state foe, Harrisburg City Islanders. With over 30 colleges in attendance in 2015 and the momentum continuing to grow, this year's event will again help deliver excellent collegiate exposure to Under-15, 16, and 17 age groups, boys and girls.
August continues the trifecta, as two events take the stage. First, the return of the Pathway to the Pros Academy Challenge will bring USL and MLS clubs to the banks of the Monongahela. The tournament will feature Academy players born in 2004, 2005, and 2006 from Chicago Fire, DC United, Columbus Crew, Richmond Kickers, and Pittsburgh Riverhounds. With a division for 2004 and a second division for combined 2005/2006, Riverhounds Development Academy teams will have the opportunity to compete against top players from the United States on their home turf, in front of coaches and scouts.
According to sporting director Jason Kutney, the Pathway to the Pros event is part of a larger working relationship the Riverhounds are developing within an initiative that involves USL and MLS Academies.
"In the near future, we will see a network of these events, with the professional clubs organizing meaningful games for young players in various markets," said Kutney. "Beyond the Pathway to the Pros, we have dates being finalized with five other pro clubs as part of this academy initiative."
In similar fashion to the College Showcase, the Pathway to the Pros event is built around a professional match, as the Riverhounds professional team play host to Louisville on Friday, August 5. Tournament games are set for Friday and Saturday.
The final tournament for the summer will be the KickIt 3v3 Soccer Northeast Regional Championships, held from Friday, August 12 through Sunday, August 14. Held just outside of Philadelphia for the past several years, the decision to move the event westward, to Pittsburgh, centered on delivering a unique and professional environment for all participants and their families. Highmark Stadium's field will be converted to accommodate six 3v3 fields, with games running all day and night through the weekend. On Saturday, August 13, the event will break for all tournament participants to watch the Riverhounds play Philadelphia Union's USL affiliate club, Bethlehem Steel FC, adding a new exciting feature to the KickIt 3v3 experience.
