March 9, 2016 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Sioux Falls Stampede News Release
Sioux Falls - Hero Sports and the Sioux Falls Stampede will team up to offer the area's first sled hockey program for athlete's with disabilities. The sled hockey initiative is geared toward anyone who isn't able to play regular stand-up hockey. The program will start out with adults who are interested in playing sled hockey and will feature two levels of play: a competitive team and a recreational group. The program hopes to expand by offering sled hockey for youth players in the future.
In March of 2015, a Try Sled Hockey event was put on for athletes with disabilities to try the sport. Corey Mitchell, Hero Sports Executive Director, procured 25 sleds through USA Hockey's Sled Lending program. During the 2-day event, 25-30 athletes tried sled hockey for the first time and felt an immediate connection to the sport. In October 2015, Mitchell applied for and was awarded the Pass It Forward grant offered by Labatt, USA. The grant, valued at $25,000, provided funds to purchase 15 sleds and protective equipment along with $10,000 to use toward ice time and other program-related needs. Labatt, USA awarded 10 of these $25,000 grants to new and developing programs across the United States. Upon being awarded the grant, Mitchell made a call to the Sioux Falls Stampede to seek a partnership with the USHL club. Partnering with the Stampede brings instant credibility to the program and will go a long way in building awareness for the program. Through the partnership, the sled hockey team will be known as the Sioux Falls Stampede Sled Hockey Team.
The program is still in the startup phase and will be creating a website soon.
