New Jersey Jackals News Release

After taking game one of a double-header earlier Thursday afternoon, the New Jersey Jackals defeated the Sussex County Miners 3-0 in game two behind a fantastic outing from starting pitcher Yasmani Hernandez.

New Jersey won the series with the in-state rival Miners marking the first series win of the season.

Center fielder Davis Harris delivered an RBI single in the top of the first to score left fielder Connor Hofmann to make it 1-0, Jackals.

RBIs by second baseman Rony Cabrera and catcher Kevin Torres in the top of the fourth made the game 3-0, New Jersey.

As it turns out, that would be all the runs the Jackals would need to win a nicely pitched ball game.

Hernandez, making just his second start of the season, stifled the Miners for seven and a third shut out innings, while scattering three hits, walking four and striking out just two.

Manager Brooks Carey then turned the game over to the bullpen and called on reliever Nate Gercken for two batters.

After a strikeout and a walk, Carey summoned left-hander Jose Velez to face Miners center fielder Jayce Ray.

The lefty on lefty matchup resulted in a strike out for Velez to finish the eighth.

Vic Black earned his first save of the year for New Jersey after working a scoreless ninth to give the Jackals its eighth win of the season.

The Jackals now head back to Yogi Berra Stadium to take on the Rockland Boulders in a three game weekend series beginning on June 8.

First pitch is set for 7:05 P.M.
