San Angelo Colts News Release
SAN ANGELO, Texas - Brian Henschel allowed a run in the first but nothing further, as he went all nine innings and the San Angelo Colts took advantage of some opportunities given to them by the Harlingen WhiteWings to win their third straight, 7-1.
The Colts (22-16), who improved to a season-best six game over .500, had just six hits but took advantage of eight walks, two wild pitches, and a passed ball to clinch the series with the WhiteWings (14-24) - only their second series of the year to not go to a rubber match.
Henschel (3-2) became the first pitcher in the United League to throw two complete games this season, with a complete game, five-hit shutout two starts ago against Amarillo. He has now won three straight starts after beginning the year 0-2. The righty struck out 10, a season high, and followed Frank James as Colts starters to go the distance.
After Harlingen got a run in the top of the first, the Colts came back with two in the third to take the lead. The first two batters, Wyn Diggs and Charley Belew, reached, but the next two Colts were retired. Then, Bryan Frichter hit his league-leading 24th double of the year, off the left-center field wall to bring home Diggs and Belew and give the Colts the lead.
San Angelo extended their lead to five runs in the fourth, as Angel Cordero (1-2) lost the strike zone. After Benny Craig led off with a double, moved to third on a groundout, and Jose Torres reached on an infield single, the 'Wings righty walked two, threw two wild pitches, and had a passed ball and a throwing error from his catcher Kevin Griffin. Cordero was gone after allowing six runs (five earned) in just 3.2 innings. Juan Jimenez pitched well in relief, allowing just one run in the final 4.1 innings.
