Odessa Jackalopes News Release
ODESSA, TX - In the seventh of twelve scheduled regular season meetings between the two teams this season, the Odessa Jackalopes fought valiantly but came up short in a 4-1 loss to the defending Robertson Cup Champion Texas Tornado Friday at Dr. Pepper Arena in Frisco, Texas. With the loss, the Jacks' eleventh in a row and 13th in their past 14 games, the Jacks fell to 4-21-2 overall this season and with 10 points, remain alone in sixth place in the NAHL's South Division standings.
After a scoreless first period, Andrew Mayer broke the ice for Texas at 10:27 of the middle frame, but Josh Racek evened the score less than a minute later courtesy of a nifty Steven Haydon to Lawrence Cornellier setup at 11:21. The Tornado took a 2-1 lead late in the second on a fluttering Alexy Soloviev point shot and sealed the deal in the third with tallies from Brandon Platt and Mitchell McPherson at 3:16 and 6:10 respectively.
In his seventh start in net for the Jacks, Phil Heinle was stellar, as the York, Pennsylvania native stopped 45 of the 49 Tornado shots he faced, his fourth 40-plus save performance for Odessa this season. While the Jackalopes struggled on the power-play, going scoreless on five man-advantage chances, the Jacks excelled on the penalty kill, denying Texas' second-ranked power-play on each of six Tornado man-up opportunities.
Next up for the Jacks, it's a Saturday matinee as Odessa takes on Texas at Dr. Pepper Arena with the opening faceoff set for noon.
In 2012-13, the Odessa Jackalopes drop the puck on their second season as a member of the North American Hockey League.
