Hechtner, Rincon Lead Sweets to Series Win over Pippins

Walla Walla Sweets News Release

YAKIMA, Wash. -- When Jeider Rincon gave up two runs in the first inning, there was a palpable tension in the air, and a feeling that it could be a long day for the left-hander. Then he retired nine straight and erased any lingering doubts.

Walla Walla's starting pitcher handed in his second quality start in as many outings and Jon Hechtner had a three hit, two RBI day as the Sweets won the series-deciding contest with the Yakima Valley Pippins 5-4 at The Orchard on Monday.

For Rincon (1-0, 2.26), trouble came on the very first at-bat, when he hit Jace Van De Brake with a payoff pitch. Back-to-back hits loaded the bases, and a two-run single by Reid Martinez put the Pippins (6-3) in front before Rincon recovered. In the second inning, after a lead-off single to Jake Manson, the left-handed Rincon retired nine straight batters, giving his team a chance to tie the game.

The Sweets (5-4) took that chance in the fifth, when Jon Hechtner drove in two runs on a double to left to level the score, but the Pippins struck right back in the bottom of the inning when Van De Brake tagged Rincon for an RBI single to retake the lead.

The visitors went ahead in the sixth when four straight batters reached, including RBI singles by Juan Gamez and Connor Kopach. The club added one more run in the ninth on a double by Parker Coss, and Cam Richman collected his second save with an inning of relief, giving up a run on another Van De Brake single.

Walla Walla travels to Bellingham Tuesday for a three-game series with the regining West Coast League champion Bells. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05.
